Hitting Percentage: The One Attack Number Worth Trusting
Hitting percentage in volleyball is kills minus attack errors, divided by total attack attempts: (K - E) / TA. A hitter with 12 kills, 4 errors, and 30 swings is hitting (12 - 4) / 30 = .267. It is the attack stat coaches trust most because it punishes errors instead of hiding them, and it is written as a three-digit decimal like a batting average. The Formula, and Why Errors Are Subtracted
Hitting percentage = (kills − errors) ÷ total attempts. The three inputs are exactly the three outcomes of an attack attempt defined in our kill guide: a kill ends the rally for you, an attack error ends it for the opponent (out, netted, stuff-blocked, or an illegal attack), and everything else is a zero attack that keeps the rally alive. Attempts count all of it, including tips and down-balls.
The subtraction is the whole point. Kills per set rewards volume: swing often enough and the kills arrive regardless of how many points you donate. Efficiency cannot be gamed that way. Every error erases a kill, so a .300 night means something specific: for every ten swings, the hitter produced three more points than she gave away, net. That is also why the number can be negative. Four kills, six errors, and twenty attempts is (4 − 6) / 20 = −.100, a real line from real youth matches, and an honest one.
Two Worked Examples
A match line. Jordan takes 28 swings: 11 kills, 3 errors, 14 zero attacks. (11 − 3) / 28 = .286. Strong for a varsity outside, excellent for JV.
A season ledger. Priya's club season across 64 sets: 142 kills, 61 errors, 388 attempts. (142 − 61) / 388 = .209. That is a good season for a 15s middle, and the ledger view matters more than any single match: efficiency stabilizes around 100+ attempts, while one match's number swings wildly with the quality of that night's passing.
What Counts as a Good Hitting Percentage

Position skews the scale. Middles run 50 to 100 points higher than outsides because they swing against fewer set blocks on better passes; a .300 middle and a .240 outside may be contributing equally. Opposites land between. Team hitting percentage tells the sharpest story of all: NCAA teams that hit .250 or better as a team win the large majority of their matches, and the same threshold shifted down roughly 80 points predicts youth match outcomes almost as well.
Read low numbers gently at young ages. A 13U hitter at .080 on clean charting is normal, because youth attempts come off imperfect passes against unpredictable defenses. The trend across a season is the signal; the single-match number is mostly noise about that night's serve receive.
What Actually Moves the Number
Hitting percentage is a team stat wearing one player's name. It moves with four levers, in roughly this order:
Pass quality. Efficiency lives and dies on first contact. Charting passes 3-2-1 alongside attack outcomes (the same scale our drill library uses in serve-receive work) will show most hitters 150 points of difference between swings off a 3-pass and swings off a 1-pass. Before blaming the hitter, look left at the passers.
Shot selection. The fastest personal fix is subtraction: converting forced swings into controlled roll shots and high-hands tips turns errors into zero attacks, and every erased error is worth exactly one kill in the formula. This is a decision skill, trainable with the setter's-choice and high-ball drills in the attacking section.
Set location and system. Hitters swing better in their best matchups, which is a lineup design question: a 5-1 gives your best outside three rotations with three front-row attackers, and where you write her in the service order decides which rotations those are. Efficiency-by-rotation is exactly the evidence that should drive the lineup sheet.
Approach mechanics. Late approaches produce low contact, and low contact produces net errors. The footwork-lines progression in the drill library is the ten-minute weekly investment that quietly buys 30 points of efficiency by October.

The number tells you who is efficient; it cannot tell you why.
