How the rotation generator works

Youth basketball subs happen at planned marks, not whenever a coach remembers. The generator splits each period into shifts, then fills every shift with five players so minutes come out even. It forces anyone who has sat two shifts in a row back on, keeps a point guard on the floor when you tag positions, and flags any player who would miss a half.

Star your five starters and they open the game together. Choose equal time for rec leagues, starters-weighted for travel teams that still play everyone, or manual when you want full control and just need the minutes math done for you.

Want the plan to follow the team all season? In Rizzler the same rotation lives on each game, the Game Manager tracks planned versus actual minutes across every game, and scoring lands on each player's record. Start with the free basketball practice plan builder if you are building out practices too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this basketball rotation generator really free?

Yes. Everything on this page works without an account: the rotation generator, equal playing time checks, the shift grid, printing, and shareable links. Your roster is saved in your browser. A free Rizzler account adds cloud save, your real roster, and the Game Manager with live playing-time tracking.

How does the equal playing time rotation work?

The generator splits each period into shifts (for example two 4-minute shifts in an 8-minute quarter) and fills every shift with five players so that minutes come out even within one shift of each other. It never sits a player more than two shifts in a row, keeps a point guard on the floor when you mark positions, and warns you if a kid would miss a whole half.

How should I rotate 8, 9 or 10 players in youth basketball?

With 8 players, start five and rotate three in and three out each shift. With 10 players, two platoons of five that alternate shifts is the simplest fair pattern. With 9 or 11, the generator staggers who sits so nobody sits twice in a row. Pick a starting five, generate, and adjust any shift by tapping the grid.

Can I give my starters more minutes and still play everyone?

Yes. The "Starters +50%" policy gives the five starters roughly half again as many minutes as the bench while still getting every player on the floor in each half. For older travel teams, "Manual" lets you set every shift yourself and simply shows you the minutes.

What quarter lengths does it support?

Any. Presets cover 8U rec (4 x 6), 10U and 12U rec (4 x 8), middle school (4 x 7), AAU and travel (2 x 16) and high school NFHS (4 x 8). Change the period length and sub interval to match your league and the grid rebuilds.

Can I print the rotation for the bench?

Yes. One click prints a rotation card listing who is on the floor for every shift, who is coming in at each sub, and each player’s minutes, so an assistant can run subs from the bench.

How do I share the rotation with parents?

Click "Share link" and the whole rotation is encoded in the URL. Text it to the team chat and every parent can see when their player is in.
