Travel Softball Age Chart (2026)

Travel softball has mostly unified on one rule: for the 2026 season, USSSA, USA Softball, PGF, Perfect Game Softball, and NCS determine a player's age group by her age on August 31, 2025 (the start of the season year). The two holdouts are Alliance Fastpitch, whose championships and qualifiers still use December 31, and Little League Softball, which uses December 31 of the previous year. If your daughter has a September-through-December birthday, the holdouts put her a division higher.

High school age (14U-18U): graduation year rule

Perfect Game and USSSA accept graduation year as an alternative to birthdate at 14U and up: 18U is the class of the season year, 17U the next class, and so on. A player qualifies if either the birthdate rule or the grad-year rule fits.

Convenience only. Each body's published age chart is binding, and local leagues and individual tournaments can adopt stricter rules. Softball bodies on the Aug 31 rule use a Sept 1 to Aug 31 season, so the "2026 season" is the one ending Aug 31, 2026. Alliance Fastpitch national events use a Dec 31 rule; confirm on the event listing.

The August 31 Chart (USSSA, USA, PGF, PG, NCS: 2026 Season)

Age on August 31, 2025 sets the division for the season that runs fall 2025 through summer 2026:
Age groupBorn between
8USep 1, 2016 or later
10USep 1, 2014 – Aug 31, 2016
12USep 1, 2012 – Aug 31, 2014
14USep 1, 2010 – Aug 31, 2012
16USep 1, 2008 – Aug 31, 2010
18USep 1, 2006 – Aug 31, 2008
Softball runs even-numbered, two-year divisions, so most players spend two seasons in each. Playing up is allowed everywhere; playing down is not.

The December 31 Holdouts

Alliance Fastpitch kept the December 31 birthdate deadline for its championship and qualifying events, explicitly declining the new standard. A girl born October 2, 2012 is 12U all season in USSSA and PGF play (she was 12 on 8/31/2025) but 14U in Alliance events (she was 13 on 12/31/2025). Teams that qualify across circuits should roster with the Alliance rule in mind, because that's the stricter check for fall birthdays.
Little League Softball uses age on December 31 of the previous year, a clean birth-year system: born 2013 means league age 12 for 2026. Different mechanism, similar effect for fall birthdays.

Which Rule Applies to Your Team?

Follow the sanctioning body of each event, not your team's self-identity. A "12U team" that plays a USSSA qualifier Saturday and an Alliance qualifier next month is applying two different charts to the same roster, and the safest roster-building rule is simple: build to the strictest cutoff your season will touch. For most teams with fall-birthday players, that means checking Alliance's December 31 rule first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the age cutoff for travel softball in 2026?

August 31 for USSSA, USA Softball, PGF, Perfect Game, and NCS: a player's division is her age on August 31, 2025 for the 2026 season. Alliance Fastpitch uses December 31 instead.

Did Alliance Fastpitch change its age cutoff?

No. Despite the rumors, Alliance confirmed its championship and qualifying events keep the December 31 birthdate deadline and do not follow the August 31 standard.

Why is softball's cutoff different from baseball's?

Travel baseball uses April 30/May 1; softball's bodies aligned on August 31 to match the school year. Same household, two calendars: check each child against their sport's chart.

When do softball age groups roll over?

At the season start in August. The new season's age (age on that August 31) applies to fall ball and carries through the following summer.
