How to Start a Volleyball Club

Starting a junior volleyball club is six things in order: define what the club is for, join a sanctioning region and insure it, lock down gym time, certify and recruit coaches, form teams through tryouts, and run the season so it does not depend on one burned-out director. Volleyball adds a hard constraint most other sports do not: court time. Gyms are scarce, the club season runs from late fall into summer alongside everything else that wants the same hardwood, and without secured practice space you do not have a club. Solve that early and the rest follows.

The honest framing first: a junior volleyball club is a small business built around gym access. The paperwork and the operation are the job. Coaching the game is the part you already know.

Define the club before you take a registration. A few questions settle the rest:

The classic founding mistake is committing to more teams than you have court hours for. A club that runs three teams with real practice time beats one that signs six and rotates them through a single cramped gym slot. Write a one-paragraph mission: model, age range, region, and development philosophy, then size the club to the gym time you can actually secure.

Junior volleyball runs through USA Volleyball's regional structure. You join your USA Volleyball region as a club, which registers your teams, coaches, and players, provides the sanctioning that lets you enter regional and national events, and handles the required background screening and SafeSport education. Many clubs also join the JVA or AAU to access additional tournaments and championships, so map the events you want to play before you pay for memberships.

Insurance comes bundled into that structure. Region and club membership typically includes the liability and accident coverage sanctioned play requires, and gym owners, schools, and rec centers will demand proof of insurance and named-insured certificates before they rent you court time. Get this in place before you sign a facility agreement.

Settle the legal and financial structure at the same time. Most clubs form as a business or a nonprofit, get an EIN, and open a dedicated bank account with real oversight. Do not run club money through a personal account. Families pay real fees, and a club needs clean, auditable books from the first deposit. Volleyball clubs collect large per-player fees, so the bookkeeping matters more than founders expect.

Build the budget before you set fees, and start with gym time because it dominates everything. Here is a representative first-year budget for a small regional club fielding three teams. Numbers swing hard on facility cost, but the line items are consistent.

Total it, divide by expected players, and you have a defensible fee. Because gym time is so large, per-player fees in club volleyball run high, often well into four figures for a national team, so the fee conversation with parents has to be honest and early. Publish where the money goes; transparency is what a first-year club trades on.

Coaches make a volleyball club, and they need real credentials, not just playing backgrounds. Every coach must complete SafeSport and background screening through your region, and most clubs want coaches who have done IMPACT or an equivalent clinic before they run a team. Recruit deliberately and start certifications early, because they gate who can be on the bench when the season starts.

Teams form through tryouts, and volleyball tryouts are tightly scheduled: regions set date windows, and families often try out for several clubs in the same week, so your tryout has to be organized and fast.
