Average Baseball Stats by Age — Youth Benchmarks for Coaches

"Is a .280 batting average good for my 11-year-old?" The answer depends entirely on the age and competition level. This page provides benchmark ranges for the most common baseball stats at each youth age group — so you know what "average," "above average," and "exceptional" look like for your players.
Important context: These ranges are approximations based on competitive youth baseball (rec leagues and travel ball vary significantly). Your league's level matters. A .350 batting average might be average at 10U rec and exceptional at 12U travel. Use these as directional guides, not absolutes.

How to Use These Benchmarks

Don't compare players to each other using these tables. Use them to understand where your team sits relative to age-appropriate norms. If your entire team's OBP is below .300, plate discipline needs work in practice. If your pitchers are all below 50% strike percentage, command is the priority.
Look at trends, not snapshots. A player who improved from .260 AVG to .310 AVG over a season had a great year — even if .310 is "average" on this chart. Development trajectory matters more than current standing.
Adjust for competition level. Travel ball stats will be lower than rec ball stats at the same age because the pitching and defense are better. A .280 AVG in 12U travel might be more impressive than a .380 in 12U rec.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are batting averages lower at older ages?

Because pitching gets better faster than hitting at the youth level. As kids age up, the pitching speed increases, pitch selection improves, and the strike zone becomes harder to cover. Lower batting averages at 14U don't mean the hitters are worse — they're facing better competition.

Should I share these benchmarks with my players?

At 12U+, sharing benchmarks can be motivating if framed correctly: "Here's what 'solid' looks like for your age — let's work toward it." Don't use benchmarks to rank players or create anxiety. Using stats without overcoaching →

These are approximate ranges compiled from youth baseball statistical analysis, coaching experience, and publicly available tournament data. They're directional — your specific league and region may differ.
